At the end of June, Malibu's centralized fundraising entity -- LEAD -- dissolved. LEAD’s objective was to raise funds for the additional staff and programs in Malibu schools -- programs that are above and beyond what the district provides. At the end of June, LEAD had raised just $92k of the $415k needed. It was enough to fully fund Malibu High School’s needs, but only 15% of what the elementary schools needed.
Here at Webster, $176k was needed to fund our seven instructional aides, P.S. ARTS and PlanetBravo program for the 20-21 school year. The money was due to the district by the end of July. Webster had raised $48k throughout the year, but a large gap remained.
We recognized the importance of these programs as we headed into another semester of distance learning.
Webster joined forces with Malibu Elementary School and launched the SOS Campaign, including a direct drive, an online auction and precision fundraising to save our schools.
On August 13th, we were able to present SMMUSD with a check for $337,543 -- inclusive of LEAD's donation of $92k. The amount covered the costs of Malibu High's Stretch Grant, the elementary school classroom aides, AND the Planet Bravo program!
While we were unable to fund P.S. ARTS, the PTA partnered with the Malibu Foundation and Big Heart Ranch to create Art & Animal Workshops for our students for the 2020-21 year.
THANK YOU to our parents who supported this effort through donations and participation in the online auction!
THANK YOU to the four parents from the PTA boards who ran the SOS Campaign:
THANK YOU to the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu who donated $25k of their Chili Cookoff proceeds to LEAD at the start of the school year.
And a special THANK YOU to Malibu Foundation, who once again stepped in and helped our community through a time of need. Their emergency grant of $160,000 helped saved our schools!
