At the end of June, Malibu's centralized fundraising entity (LEAD) dissolved. They were the organization designated to raise the funds for incremental staff and programs for Malibu Schools - above and beyond what the district provides. This is fully funded by parents and donations. At the end of June, LEAD had raised $92k against costs of $415k. Enough to fully fund MHS needs and 15% of what the elementary schools needed.
At Webster, $176k was needed to fund our 7 instructional Aides, P.S. ARTS and Planet Bravo for the 20-21 school year - and it was due to the district by the end of July in order to retain the staff & staffed programs. Webster had raised $48k throughout the year towards the effort, but a large gap remained.
We recognized the importance of these programs as we were heading into another semester of distance learning.
Webster joined forces with Malibu Elementary School and launched the SOS Campaign and spent 7 weeks launching a direct drive, an online auction and precision fundraising to Save Our Schools.
On August 13th, we were able to present SMMUSD with a check for $337,543 - inclusive of LEAD's donation of $92k. to pay for the costs of Malibu High's Stretch grant AND retain all of the elementary school instructional aides (12) and the Planet Bravo program across both schools!
We could not fund P.S. ARTS with the money raised, however the PTA is working on some alternative enrichment opportunities to ensure art remains a part of our student's learning experience.
THANK YOU to all of our parents who supported this effort through donations and participation in the online auction!
THANK YOU to the four parents from the PTA boards who ran the SOS Campaign:
THANK YOU to the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu who made a $25k donation to LEAD at the start of the year from Chili Cookoff proceeds.
And a HUGE THANK YOU to Malibu Foundation who once again stepped in and helped our community through a time of need - their emergency grant of $160,000 really saved our schools!
